More Warnings In Caribbean Ahead Of Strengthening TS Sandy

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Hurricane Warnings remain up in Jamaica and have now been issued for parts of eastern Cuba ahead of Tropical Storm Sandy.

At 11:00 p.m., the system was located 195 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica with top sustained winds of 60 mph with higher gusts.  Sandy was slowly moving to the north-northeast at 10 mph.

The following watches and warnings have been issued ahead of Tropical Storm Sandy:

Hurricane Warning: Jamaica, Cuban Provinces of Camaguey, Las Tunas, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin, and Guantanamo

Tropical Storm Warning: Haiti, Central Bahamas

Tropical Storm Watch: The Southeastern and Northwestern Bahamas

The National Hurricane Center forecast states that the storm will continue to move to the north-northeast, and increase in forward speed, over the next 48 hours.  On the forecast track, the center of Sandy will move near or over Jamaica on Wednesday and approach eastern Cuba Wednesday evening.

Sandy is expected to produce total rainfall amounts of 6 to 12 inches across Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Eastern Cuba.  Some areas could see up to 20 inches of rain.  These rains may produce life threatening flash floods and mudslides.
